ited to the papers of General Pershing and several other par-
ticipants and the published Foreign Relations of the United
States for 1916 and 19g7. The Mexican response was measured
by several interviews and the standard published secondary ac-
counts. The major weakness is the author's treatment of the
diplomacy surrounding the punitive expedition. President Ven-
ustiano Carranza's vacillating policy could have been clarified
through use of the unpublished Department of State dispatches
(especially Records of the Department of State Relating to the
Internal Affairs of Mexico, 1910-1929, Microcopy 274). Profes-
sor Braddy also, would have profited by a short trip from El
Paso to Albuquerque where he could have consulted the rich
Albert Bacon Fall Collection of the University of New Mexico.
Senator Fall's Mexican papers contain a wealth of untapped
documentation on the Columbus raid and the Pershing ex-
pedition. Most importantly, the definitive work on the expe-
dition will have to be researched in two Mexico City reposi-
tories: the Archivo de Relaciones Exteriores de Mexico for the
Mexican diplomatic response and the Archivo Hist6rico de
la Defensa Nacional for the military response of the Carranza
government.
In short Professor Braddy has provided us with a handy and
useful account. Mexicanists in the United States will direct
interested students to it for a number of years until more of
the available documentation has been perused, structured, and
interpreted.
Finally, the Texas Western Press would have helped justify
a five dollar price tag for an 82-page book, as well as provided
a service to the reader, if they would have used footnotes rather
than endnotes.
