ardson (Stephen F. Austin), Ben Procter (James B. Bonham), J.
Frank Dobie (Jim Bowie), H. Bailey Carroll (David Crockett),
Joseph Milton Nance (James W. Fannin), Llerena Friend (Sam
Houston), Dorman Winfrey (Mirabeau B. Lamar), James Day
(Ben Milam), and Joe B. Frantz (William B. Travis), have all
distilled their facts well and presented their subjects as flesh and
blood men. Actually there is little of a hero-worshipping or
eulogizing tone in any of these essays. In this regard, we learn that
on occasion Fannin could turn to slave trading and that Bowie
was not the most scrupulous of merchants. The humor through-
out the book is sprightly and, all in all, the Texian Press at Waco
is to be commended.

The Presidio La Bahia Del Espiritu Santo De Zuniga, 172r-r846.

Mrs. O'Connor's book is the first major publication devoting
its entire contents to the history of the fortress La Bahia from
its founding on Espiritu Santo Bay in 1721, through the ioo
turbulent years of Spanish occupancy, the horrifying massacre of
Colonel James W. Fannin and other events of the Texas Revolu-
tion of 1835-36, to the demise of the old fort.
The primary emphasis of Presidio La Bahia, involving much
effort and research, has been devoted to the period from 1835 to
1846. This study makes at least three significant contributions to
Texas history.
First, Mrs. O'Connor, a descendant of many of these first Texas
families, has opened her own family archives and apparently
persuaded some of her friends to do likewise to provide the
reader with an extensive study of the roles played by Don Carlos,
John J. Linn, Thomas O'Connor, James Power, Nicholas Fagan,
James W. Byrne, Pryor Lea, and other men whose importance in
the history of Goliad is of the highest significance.
