Sidelights arld Supplemets on the Perote
Prisoers
Edited by LLERENA B. FRIEND
[The following is a continuation of material on the Perote
Prisoners, the first section of which appeared in the January, 1965,
Quarterly.]
Green lists two William Millers as Mier men who died in
Mexico. Trueheart, in his diary on December 17, 1843, recorded
"We hear from Wm. Muller, one of the Mier prisoners." On that
same day, Canfield wrote that William H. Miller, "a good sol-
dier," died at the hospital and was buried in the prison "dyke."
His relationship or any possible connection with one Henry
Miller is not clear. A letter dated Mexico, March 26, 1844, went
to Waddy Thompson at Jalapa:7
My dear general
Being informed that by your recommendation, several Texian
prisoners at Perote have been released by the President and knowing
that you are so near to Gove and in his favour like Ganimede, I beg
leave to apply to your kindness to me, by asking your powerfull sup-
port for the release of a poor german left alone in Perote because all
his countrymen were allready put in liberty. His name is Henry Miuller
who applied to me several times in the most pityfull terms-Your
intercession in his favour would make him soon as happy and grate-
full to you than so many others whom you have delivered from their
prison. ... adios
Your's most sincerely
von Gerratt
Another Mier prisoner who had occasion to be grateful to
Thompson was Fenton M. Gibson." He wrote to General Thomp-
son from Powder Mills on September 12, 1843:
