PEROTE CASTLE IN MEXICO WAS THE UNPREMEDITATED ABODE
of a number of Texans between 1841 and 1844. The first
involuntary visitors were members of the Texan Santa Fe
Expedition, most of whom had a relatively short imprisonment
from the winter of 1841 to June, 1842. In the fall of 1842, Gen-
eral Adrian Woll took San Antonio, and fifty of his captives, in-
cluding survivors of the Dawson Massacre, were incarcerated in
Perote in December, 1842, some of them remaining there until
March, 1844. They were joined early in 1843 by the prisoners
secured from the Mier Expedition, the last of whom were re-
leased on September 16, 1844.
Thomas Jefferson Green's Texian Expedition against Mier,
William P. Stapp's The Prisoners of Perote, and Thomas W.
Bell's A Narrative of the Capture and Subsequent Sufferings of
the Mier Prisoners in Mexico-all three books printed in 1845-
have told the story of the Mier Expedition. The diary of James
L. Trueheart, a San Antonio captive, was edited by F. C. Chabot
as The Perote Prisoners in 1934. In 1952, Rena Maverick Green
edited Samuel Maverick, Texan: 1803-1870, the story of another
San Antonio captive, which included the Maverick letters and
journals written in and from Perote. In 1910, E. W. Winkler
edited in the Quarterly of the Texas State Historical Association,
XIII, the Anderson Hutchinson diary, accounts by William E.
Jones and Andrew Neill, and listed printed memoirs of other
Bexar and Dawson prisoners. Judge C. W. Raines had secured,
in June, 1897, a letter from W. F. McMath, one of the Mier men,
