THE SOUTHWESTERN HISTORICAL QUARTERLY
VOL. LXVIII JULY, 1964 No. 1

WHO KEEPS A JOURNAL? WHAT KIND OF A PERSON MAKES A
daily record of his activities? Why does he? These ques-
tions perhaps are answered in the overall by the jour-
nals of Edward Dixon Westfall. These reminiscences were read by
the current authors and editors about the same time a news re-
lease in the San Antonio newspapers stated that 100oo,ooo books
had circulated in the first one hundred days following the open-
ing of San Antonio's newest public library, the Westfall Branch.
The branch had been named in honor of Edward Dixon Westfall,
because funds he had bequeathed in 1891 were used toward the
current library construction.
Westfall began his journals in 1886, at the age of sixty-six, and
continued them until his death in 1897. What are the values and
contents therein? Certainly the handwriting was often difficult to
decipher, and there was obvious truth in his statement:
i believe i have seen grammar written or printed on the
title page of a book but if i ever did its a long time ago
yet there is one thing i am sure of and that is i know nothing
of its contents
He used few commas and capitals, no periods, and did not
hyphenate his words. His style, however, was vigorous and often
colorful; his vocabulary was extensive. Despite the lack of punctu-
ation and the misspelled words one reads on through the eleven
closely written ledgers, for the reader begins to enjoy Westfall for
such comments as this:
