JAMES LEA CATE
T IS AN HONOR TO BE INVITED TO ADDRESS THIS ANNUAL MEETING
of the Texas State Historical Association, one that I appre-
ciate the more since I have seen the abundance of local
talent available., My thanks are due to Bailey Carroll and the
program committee, and ultimately to Joe Frantz who responded
to my broad hints for an invitation with his usual quiet efficiency.
I appreciate too Mr. Cotten's courtesy to a guest; he has inter-
preted the role of president literally by presiding rather than by
delivering the principal address tonight, and toward the shank
of the evening there may be many here who will regret his mod-
esty. Certainly his is a form of self-denial not to be found in your
sister organization that includes the other forty-nine states. In
the American Historical Association the president's address at
the annual dinner is apparently the one important function of
his office. Most often the speech will deal with some problem of
historiography or philosophy of history and not infrequently it
will be embellished with some personal reminiscences. Over the
last three decades and more I have attended quite a few meetings
of the American Historical Association and I show a bias shared
by some others in this room when I admit that the two presi-
dential addresses I remember with greatest pleasure include the
one I heard Walter Webb deliver at Washington in 1958, and
another that I did not hear because with Walter and Terrell Webb
and other Texas cronies I was enjoying better food and better
discourse in a restaurant well out of earshot of the convention
