H. BAILEY CARROLL
HE ASSOCIATION RECENTLY RECEIVED AN INQUIRY FROM
Werner Wilkins, 835 Norgate Drive, Ridgewood, New
Jersey 07450, regarding the monogram and inscription
on the keystone in the round arch over the main door of the
Alamo. The inquiry was passed on to Henry B. Dielmann, Tower
Life Building, San Antonio 5, Texas. Dielmann advised that the
monogram is as follows:
Under the monogram are the letters N O D and the date 1718.
Dielmann has proposed that the monogram is an abbreviation
of the name Maria, and that the letters N O D stand for Anno
Domini. He has suggested that other Association members may
have information relevant to the symbols. If such information is
available, its transmission to Dielmann, to Wilkins, and to the
Association would be appreciated.
The Texas Architecture Survey, sponsored by the school of
architecture at the University of Texas and the Amon Carter
Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth, is conducting a study of
the nineteenth century architecture of 'Texas. It is hoped that a
comprehensive list of buildings in each community will be com-
piled with special emphasis on those in danger of destruction and
those omitted from earlier lists. When the project is completed
the material compiled will be used to produce a photographic
exhibition and an illustrated publication. Suggestions and infor-
mation will be appreciated.
Recently Dr. Pat I. Nixon, fellow of the Association, was hon-
ored at a dinner in San Antonio where he was presented an en-
graved plaque commemorating his fifty-three years of medical serv-
ice to the city. "Dr. Pat" is the author of three books and nu-
merous articles on medicine in Texas.
