as most readers might think.
In spite of this interesting contribution to biography and to
early geology in Texas, it still remains, probably for a competent
geologist, to sum up in total the impact of J. A. Udden on geolog-

For more than a generation, a rising chorus of teachers and
students of Texas history has literally clamored for additional
source materials to supplement and expand the quest for greater
understanding of the state's genesis and historical development.
Good textbooks and a number of authoritative secondary ac-
counts have been available, but access to reliable documentary
publications has become increasingly more limited as the older
published collections of documents have more and more joined
the ranks of "rare Texana."
Recognizing the need for the publication of a comprehensive,
reasonably priced volume of selected original writings on Texas
history, Association Fellow Ernest Wallace projected an at least
partial solution to the problem in the first edition of his Docu-
ments of Texas History, which was compiled and translated with
the assistance of David M. Vigness and published by the Texas
Technological College Press in 1960. The present publication
represents the full harvest of Professor Wallace's initial project.
Reproducing the content of the 1960 edition, which provided
coverage only for the period 1528-1846 (see "Book Reviews,"
Southwestern Historical Quarterly, LXV, 149-150), the latest
edition, published in attractive and durable style by the Steck
Company of Austin, gives the indispensable comprehensive cov-
erage from 1528 through 1961 that is needed especially by the
smaller secondary schools that do not possess particularly impres-
sive library appropriations. The practical and logical format de-
signed for the shorter first edition is continued, featuring brief
introductory paragraphs to identify and place the divisions of
