commissioned officers, and 37 enlisted men, the strength at the Post
being two officers & 48 men.
The company, its quarters, arms & accoutrements were in excellent
condition as was every thing connected with the Post. The Com-
mander appears to be very zealous, & attentive to the performance
of his duties.
The hospital, men's quarters, & kitchens, the store houses--indeed
nearly all the buildings-were of the old depot, and not designed
for the military purposes to which they are now applied; yet they ap-
pear very neat & comfortable & shew what may be done by a deter-
mination to make the best of every thing. The officers' quarters & the
administrative building are comfortable. The Post and company
books & records are properly kept.
Altho' the hospital may be said to be improvised, the sick are
comfortably provided for. Dr Van Duyn, Acting Asst. Surgeon, is
in charge. The sanitary condition is satisfactory. There is a supply
of every thing that is necessary for his department.
Lt. [Edwin R.] Clark, ioth Infy, is the a a qm & subsistence officer.
The Post being a dependency of San Antonio there is little property
here. What there is is properly cared for. The stables are in good
condition. As a a-qmaster he has no funds. ...
There seems to be little use for this Post; but it is convenient as a
starting-point & resting-place for detachments from the east destined
for the interior.583
