major achievements were the building and training of a com-
petent faculty, the improving of curriculum and instruction, the
developing of school libraries, and the introduction of the twelfth
grade into the Port Arthur system. A concluding chapter com-
pletes the biography with a discussion of Sims' years in retire-
ment prior to his death in 1961.
Adding interest and perspective to the volume are a number
of comments, reminiscences, and tributes by Sims' associates
in the Port Arthur schools, an article on the Negro schools of
Port Arthur by W. E. Sampson, and a postscript about the
G. M. Sims elementary school named in his honor even before
