Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The New World Looks at its History: Proceedings of the Second
International Congress of Historians of the United States
and Mexico. Edited by Archibald R. Lewis and Thomas
F. McGann. Austin (University of Texas Press), 1963.
Pp. ix+22o. Notes, index, map. $4.00.
The content of this volume is made up of papers and critical
comments which were delivered at the sessions of the Second
International Congress of Historians of the United States and
Mexico, held at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, Novem-
ber 3-6, 1958. In the general introduction to the book the editors
state that the broad purpose with which the program represented
by this series of papers was concerned was to examine "the spe-

interest its historians." The material in the book is divided into
five sections, the first four of which are concerned with different
aspects of New World History, while the fifth treats of the man-
ner in which established scholars of various national origins
view the task and duties of the historian. At the end of each
section is included a commentary upon the papers in that sec-
tion. Editorial commentaries which precede each section and
treat of the professional interests of the authors and the scope
of their papers maintain the continuity of the book within the
limits of its stated purpose.
Limitations of space make a listing here of the individual
papers presented impractical, but the section headings which
follow will indicate the broad area of history surveyed in the
volume: "Prehistoric Peoples," "The Medieval Iberian Frontier,"
"The Frontier and Ranching in the United States and Mexico,"
"The Great Frontier Concept," and "The Historian's Task from
Mexican and United States Viewpoints." Under these five head-
ings sixteen separate papers and commentaries by as many dif-
ferent writers are presented; each writer is a recognized scholar
whose opinions derive weight from experience and knowledge.
The reviewer conceives it to be outside his province to hold
each paper up for critical analysis, and will instead direct his
attention to the somewhat panoramic entity of the book.
As to physical properties, The New World Looks at its History
is more than adequate. It is inexpensive without having the ap-304
