The Gila Trail: The Texas Argonauts and the California Gold
Rush. By Benjamin Butler Harris. Edited by Richard H.
Dillon. Norman (University of Oklahoma Press), 1960.
Pp. ix+ 175. $4.00.
This book is a fascinating account of the Isaac H. Duval expe-
dition which departed from Panola County, Texas, on March 25,
1849, and arrived in the gold fields of California six months
later. Benjamin Butler Harris, a member of the fifty-two-man
Duval party, wrote his reminiscences some forty years after the
journey took place. Harris was able to recall vividly the events of
the tedious trek through Texas, Chihuahua, Sonora, Arizona, and
California. Most of the account centers on the gold field activities,
but will be of some value to those interested in trail studies and
the Texas Forty-Niners.
The editor, Richard H. Dillon, has supplied an excellent
introduction, academic annotations, and a bibliographical note.
As volume thirty-one in the American Exploration and Travel
Series, this work will remain significant because it preserves the
record of one of the earliest emigrant parties to make the trip
from Texas to California by saddle horse and pack mule.
