Southwestern Historical Quarterly
so recognized. It was read by all who had access to its publication
medium, but those were comparatively few. All they saw was an
attractive, but unidentified, bit of verse by an unknown author
on one subject.
This poem was one of the few items in Gathered Leaves, Green,
Gold, and Sere that had ever been printed before. Almost all of
the others were written under compulsion to satisfy an inner urge
of the author. E. J. Palmer is scarcely better known outside of
botanical circles at the present time than he was when he wrote
"TEXAS." It is my hope to introduce him further to a few
kindred spirits as the versatile and natural poet he was. Palmer
had the unique ability to choose such language as well fitted his
subject matter. The small volume contains almost every conceiv-
able kind of poetry that can be written. Thus Gathered Leaves
gives the reader, for the first time, an accurate picture of Palmer
as a philosopher, naturally endowed and highly trained in the
art of painting word pictures in poetry.
