The Battle of Calcasieu Pass 67
of 1864, augmented the effect of Confederate successes during
the Red River campaign in northwestern Louisiana to give the
Trans-Mississippi Confederacy its last great morale boost of the
war. Actually, Calcasieu Pass was the last significant defeat of
Union naval forces by Texas coastal defense units, but it
rounded out an enviable record of four major victories within
eighteen months for the Texans. The engagement also proved to
be the last large-scale action fought for control of the Texas coast,
and although the Civil War continued for a year thereafter, most
Texas ports remained under the Confederate flag to the last.25
