The old house, in a sense, met an ignoble end. On the corner
below it at Travis Street stood the Bell Variety Theatre, also called
the New Variety in its later days. Shortly before eight o'clock in
the evening on May 3, while the girls sang and danced, the vaude-
ville house caught on fire and within half an hour it and the more
respected place of Thespis that adjoined lay in smouldering ruins.
