Through the generosity of Grace E. Curtis of Redlands, Cali-
fornia, and Mrs. Hubert B. Jones of Austin, Texas, the Association
has received a spoon, a bone toothpick, and a wooden needle
which belonged to William and Mary Curtis, residents of Central
Texas in the 1850's. Each item is an excellent example of ante-
bellum household utensils; the spoon bearing the date 183g on
its handle. All will be placed in the soon to be completed Aca-
demic Center at the University of Texas.
The Barker History Center Archives has received a letter dated
August 13, 1875, which gives a common man's view of the de-
pression which hit Texas in the mid-1870's. When a former stu-
dent sent the letter written by a G. C. Dawson of Waco to Robert
C. Cotner, professor of history at the University of Texas, Cotner
generously deposited the letter in the Archives.
