attacked San Lorenzo and the missionaries were forced to aban-
don it, retreating to Mexico.
University archeologists learned of impending damage to the
historic site when the local chamber of commerce began bull-
dozing it with plans for reconstructing the mission as a tourist
attraction. These plans are proceeding, but fortunately, Newcomb
said, archeologists were able to begin excavation before any major
damage had been done. The University project is directed by
Newcomb, professor of anthropology and director of the Texas
Memorial Museum. Curtis Tunnell, the museum's anthropology
curator, is currently working at Camp Wood.
The Mustang (November, 1962), monthly publication of the
Texas Memorial Museum, contained an article on "The Mission

Frank E. Tritico, president of the Sons of the Republic of Texas,
has written to correct an error of omission in the Texas Collection
for July, 1962. The complete list of those elected as Knights of
San Jacinto by the Sons of the Republic includes: John Nance
Garner of Uvalde, Frank M. Gossett of Highlands, and Paul R.
Stalnaker and Frank E. Tritico of Houston.
Tritico also provided the accompanying picture of most of the
original committee which met with Governor Daniel in 1956 and
presented an eight point program to preserve the Texas heritage,
which included the state library and archives building in the
background. Mrs. Joe Wearden of Victoria represents her late
husband who was chairman of the Sons of the Republic of Texas
legislative committee. Mrs. Barclay Megarity of Waco was pres-
ident of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1956. Frank
Tritico was secretary of the Sons of the Republic of Texas in 1956,
while Father Anton Frank is chaplain of the Sons of the Republic
of Texas. Not pictured is Joseph F. Blanton who was president of
the Sons of the Republic of Texas in 1956.
