This lady, an only daughter, whose image is still in my mind,
married some years afterwards a good, but illiterate Frenchman. She
was a victim of the storm at Last Island in 1856. The only child she
had, her slave servant girl saved in that fearful storm by clinging for
hours to a mesquite tree. The husband in gratefulness set the slave
free. The gentleman was in San Marcos in 186o in company with
Miscipsi Young and others.* From him I learned the sad fate of his
wife, and a more particular description of the later disaster at "Last
Island."
*Mr. Ed. J. L. Green remembers this visit, and informs us the French gentleman's
name was Como.-ED. FREE PRESS.
