The confusion attending the five frontier companies furnishes
an interesting case study of the results of failing either to define
responsibility or to give equivalent authority without strings
attached. By June, 1847, such a simple solution for the frontier
companies had been found that it seems incredible that it could
have been overlooked in the first place. Governor George T.
Wood was given the power to call and to muster the companies
needed.0
