Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The Padre Island Story. By Loraine Daly and Pat Reumert. San
Antonio (The Naylor Company), 1962. Pp. xii+52. Illus-
trations, bibliography. Cloth $2.95, paper $1.oo.
The fascinating history of Padre Island long has inspired per-
sons to try their hands at recording its past in much the same
manner as they would record the life of a famous beauty of by-
gone days. Woven into the texts of their stories are many roman-
tic adventures and legends, and some documented facts concern-
ing those who make up the great panorama of the island's his-
torical past.
In reading The Padre Island Story, one is soon impressed with
the thought that the authors were not interested so much in the
facts of the island's history as they were in the romance and the
adventures that its history inspires.
An examination of the book reveals that only twenty-one of
the fifty-two pages, excluding illustrations, concern Padre Island
directly. The remaining pages deal with the Lower Rio Grande
Valley of today-its present cities and some cities located near the
upper end of the island. While the illustrations are excellent,
very few of them are scenes of Padre Island. The twenty-four
pages containing thirty-five illustrations reveal, however, what
appears to be the purpose of the story.
Of the twenty-one pages of the text that concern Padre Island
directly, only fifteen refer to the history of the island. In the
historical references, the following historical errors have been
noted:
On page 2 of the volume, the authors have written, "Cabeza
de Vaca, who stepped ashore on the southern tip of Padre Is-
land. . ." Three documents of note refute the foregoing state-
ment. Harbert Davenport and Joseph K. Wells in the South-
western Historical Quarterly, XXII and XXVII, trace the route
taken by Cabeza de Vaca and his companions through their 6ooo
mile odyssey, and at no time place them on the southern tip of
Padre Island. Morris Bishop's Odyssey of Cabeza de Vaca takes
the expedition even farther away from Padre Island than do
Davenport and Wells.
Also on page 2, the authors have claimed visits to Padre Island
by La Salle, De Soto, and Cortez. Although La Salle and Penalosa324
