Foreigners in the Principal Towns of Ante-Bellum Texas
shows a breakdown of all occupations listed for foreign males aged
eighteen or above in the city of Houston. Tables 3 and 4 show
similar occupational breakdowns for sample wards of Galveston
and San Antonio in 186o. There were in all of the towns numer-
ous German brewers and barkeepers, Mexican cigar makers,
French cooks, German bakers, Polish servant girls, Irish porters
and chambermaids, and Swiss watchmakers. More unusual occupa-
tions included a Mexican sportsman, an Italian stage driver, a
Mexican grave digger, an English ginger pop maker, a German
"rover," and a German operator of a house of ill repute.
Foreigners were found distributed all along the social-economic
ladder of Texas towns, as indicated in Table 5, which shows prop-
erty holdings of foreigners in Houston for 186o. In the federal
census for Houston 294 foreigners were listed as holders of real
property and 297 as holders of personal property. Thus about
one-fourth of the total foreign born population in Houston were
