manuscript census returns also shows that the percentage of for-
eign born in the total free population of San Antonio increased
from 39.0 to 47.1 per cent and in Houston from 32.o to 35.7 per
cent. Galveston, on the other hand, showed a decrease in the
percentage of foreigners in total population, falling from 48.0 per
cent in 1850 to 44.0 per cent in 186o, even though there were
eleven hundred more foreigners present in 186o than in 1850.
