communications with United States presidents, and the one he
treasures most.
The DeGolyer Foundation of Dallas recently announced the
opening of its rare book room at Fondren Library, Southern
Methodist University. Sue Herzog, newly appointed custodian,
will cooperate with James Phillips, cataloguer and bibliographer,
in making the rare book collection available for the furtherance
of scholarship. Included are fine collections of material on the
history of the trans-Mississippi states and Mexico, economic and
business history, and geology left to the Foundation primarily by
its co-founder, Everett L. DeGolyer, a former patron of the
Association.
Texas in the g96o Presidential Election by O. Douglas Weeks,
professor of government at the University of Texas, was published
in February by the University of Texas Institute of Public Affairs.
The February, 1962, issue of Texas Military History, quar-
terly publication of the National Guard Association of Texas,
contains articles on "Rebirth, Growth, and Expansion of the
Texas Militia, 1868-1898," by Christian G. Nelson, "Sabine Pass,
September, 1863," by Alwyn Barr, and "Military Aviation in
Texas, 1913-1917," by William C. Pool, a reprint from the South-
western Historical Quarterly. Documents included were "Mem-
ories of a Lost Cause," the Civil War reminiscences of J. M. Polk,
and "Report of the Adjutant General, 1884," by W. H. King.
Stanley Baron, in his recently published history of beer and
ale in the United States, Brewed in America, makes mention of
the breweries of German immigrants to Texas, the Texas Brewing
Company, and the Texas Brewers' Association.
Extracts from John C. West, Texan in Search of a Fight (Waco,
1901), are included in The Tragic Conflict, a newly published
compilation by William B. Hesseltine of writings on the Civil
War and Reconstruction by participants in the events of that
crucial period.
