The University of Texas honored Caleb Perry Patterson, pro-
fessor emeritus of government, during the fall of 1961 by estab-
lishing the C. P. Patterson-Thomas Jefferson Collection. The
collection, which includes manuscripts and other source material
on Jefferson, will be housed in the new Academic Center pres-
ently under construction. Patterson received the honor as a lead-
ing authority on Jefferson; The Constitutional Principles of
Thomas Jefferson being only one among some thirty-five books
and sixty articles "Dr. Pat" has written or edited.
Tom Hickman, a Texas Ranger for seventeen years in the oil
boom era of the 192o's and 193o's, died on January 29, 1962, in
Gainesville. As a captain of the rangers, he was in Borger, Ranger,
Mexia, Kilgore, Burkburnett, Desdemona, Breckenridge, and
Wink when they were the scenes of violence in every form during
the oil boom decades. Hickman had also served as a deputy
constable at Gainesville, as a special officer for Gulf Oil Company,
and as a member of the Texas Public Safety Commission.
In May, 1956, Hickman rode the old Chisholm Trail south on
horseback from Caldwell, Kansas, to Nocona, Texas. His ride was
made in conjunction with the ride north over the trail from San
Antonio by members of the Texas State Historical Association and
the Old Trail Drivers Association of Texas.
