EIGHT VOLUMES OF THE DAVY CROCKETT ALMANACS PUBLISHED
between 1835 and 1842, recently purchased by Edward
Clark of Austin, highlight the exhibits of eight private col-
lectors of Texana shown at the University of Texas this spring and
summer in conjunction with an exhibit of material from the
University's own collection. Individual copies of the almanacs
are rare, and a group such as the one Clark now owns is a rare
jewel in any collection of Texana. He is certainly to be com-
mended on his efforts to bring the group to Texas where Crockett
is not only a part of the history but also of the folklore of the
state.
Palmer Bradley, J. P. Bryan, Price Daniel, Jenkins Garrett,
Dorsey B. Hardeman, George P. Isbell and Cooper Ragan, all
members of the Association, also are exhibiting items from their
collections. The eight collectors have combined a love for Texas
with a love for books, seeking diligently to preserve for posterity
the heritage of their state. By allowing the University to display
items from their private collections, they have doubtlessly imbued
in others the desire to seek out and to preserve those books and
manuscripts which will lay open the past for generations to come.
The books belonging to the collectors are being displayed in
the Stark Room of the Humanities Research Center from March
6 until September 1. Students, faculty and visitors to the Uni-
versity thus have been given the opportunity to look at the books
which are such an important key to the history of Texas. A cata-
logue of material included in the University's exhibit has been
mailed to all members of the Association. The following lists
itemize the books and manuscripts shown by the collectors. Un-
fortunately lack of space prevented the showing of all the rare
and important books belonging to any of the collectors, but the
sample on display has provided a treat for all who have been able
to visit the exhibit.
