history, however; it is an important addition to the much neg-

A classified bibliography is always a welcomed addition to the
library of any student, teacher, or researcher, and this particular
item is a significant contribution to research materials relating
to the western half of the United States.
In 1942 the Indiana University Press published a similar vol-
ume entitled Trans-Mississippi West: A Guide to Its Periodical
Literature. Because of the voluminous output of regional history
and the emergence of new regional journals over the past twenty
years, the 1942 Guide, which listed 3,501 items, was deemed
inadequate. This more recent publication, which is Number 19
in the Indiana University Social Science Series, has increased the
number of references to 9,244, by including items published
between 1938 and 1957.
The writer devotes forty-three pages to the source materials
of Texas and the Southwest. Topics are classified in the Table of
Contents under headings such as bibliography and historiography;
geography, geology, and anthropology; Indians; Spanish; missions;
French; American colonization, Stephen F. Austin; Texas Revo-
lution; Republic of Texas; personalities; annexation; political;
slavery; secession, Civil War, and reconstruction; military; ranch-
ing; agriculture; petroleum; transportation; economic, culture;
and journalism.
The bibliographical entries, such as articles, journals and
diaries, letters, newspapers, official documents, and reminiscences,
which are concerned with Texas history, are taken primarily from
the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Hispanic American His-
torical Review, Southwestern Social Science Quarterly, South-
