T HIS SURVEY OF MAPS IN THE TEXAS STATE ARCHIVES iS com-
piled with the hope that researchers will be able to use
the maps in a more facile manner. After examination of
the maps, it was found that no single set of rules would cover
every situation. The following works furnished the guides for
laying down the basic principles used: Philip Lee Phillips, A List
of Maps of America in the Library of Congress Preceded by A List
of Works relating to Cartography (Washington, 1901); Philip
Lee Phillips (ed.), The Lowery Collection, A Descriptive List of
Maps of the Spanish Possessions within the Present Limits of the
United States, 1502-1820 by Woodbury Lowery (Washington,
1912); R. Thomassy, Cartographie de la Louisiana (New Or-
leans, 1859) ; Lloyd A. Brown, Notes on the Care and Cataloguing
of Old Maps (Windham, 1941).
The number on the left of each listing shows the historical
period of time the map represents. If the historical date and the
date of publication are not simultaneous, the latter will be found
either in the title or the body of the listing. The title used is that
shown on the map. If the map had no specific title, one was created
and brackets [ ] were used as a distinguishing feature. The
number to the right of the title is the number by which the map is
filed in the Archives and is the one persons should request when
they desire to examine a particular map.
