Washington-on-the-Brazos, know in 1836 simply as "the Town of Washington, Texas,"
is still only a village on a bluff above the Brazos. Today, as in March, 1836, it offers
meager accommodations for travellers seeking room and board, but has a plentiful
supply of spirits for sale. This view is of the present main street, believed to have been
originally called Ferry Street.

The principal business section of the town of Washington, today, has a postoffice,
at left, a large liquor store, center, and a garage-grocery, at right. The sign points
the way to the town's primary source of business, the 500-acre Washington State Park,
annually visited by thousands of Texans.
